Cyrtanthus, formerly known as Purple Amaryllis, are tender bulbs with magnificent trumpet flowers reminiscent of those of Amaryllis, cultivated in flower beds in the south. These plants develop ribbon-like, arching, green leaves and flowering stems between 30 and 60 cm (12 and 24in) tall with large umbels of 6 to 8 flowers ranging in shades from red to pink. Easy to grow but Cyrtanthus are frost-sensitive. In spring, plant them in a large pot, in a mixture of 1/3 turf, 1/3 garden soil, and 1/3 sand. Leave the bulb protruding 1 to 2 cm (0 to 1in) above the surface and water without excess. A monthly liquid fertilizer application is necessary. Place the pot in full sunlight. Stop watering as soon as the foliage wilts. Among the 50 species, the most well-known is the Vallota speciosa or Cyrtanthus elatus, with beautiful bright red star-shaped flowers measuring 10cm (4in) in diameter. Advice: During winter, place the potted bulbs in a shaded and cool location. Be careful, Cyrtanthus do not like to be disturbed, repot only every 5 years.
