Eucomis or Pineapple plant is a perennial bulbous plant, moderately hardy. Each bulb produces a rosette of long shiny ribbon-like leaves, light green or speckled with purple depending on the variety. In September, a robust stem carries a tight cluster of star-shaped flowers. This cluster bears a small tuft of foliose bracts like the pineapple. Plant the bulbs in full sun, 15cm (6in) deep in fertile and well-drained soil. Water once or twice a week during growth. Mulch if the winter is harsh.
