Description

Eucomis 'Burgundy Wine' is a variety of pineapple lily with pink flowers and purple foliage. In autumn, it develops a pink and purple flowering stem that is 20cm (8in) high, formed by a multitude of star-shaped flowers. The almost black purple foliage consists of undulate strips 5cm (2in) wide and 40cm (16in) long. It is a spectacular plant.

The flowering lasts for several weeks and the plant remains decorative even with its faded flowers.

We provide large-sized bulbs (20+) which will flower in the first year.

Planting and care

It is sensitive to cold temperatures below -10°C (14°F). It can be grown outdoors in mild regions, but elsewhere it should be cultivated in a pot or stored before the first frosts. The growth of the plants is quite slow. Ideally, they should be planted in a pot early in the season, covered with 5cm (2in) of soil. The best time to plant is from February onwards. They will be happy in rich and light compost. Leave the pot in the sun, watering regularly. Take the pot outside after the last frost, and place it in a sunny location. It is a heavy feeder and requires regular application of organic fertiliser. For pot cultivation, change the soil every year.
