More information

Large, sumptuous, intensely coloured flowers, particularly dark but also bright. Against the light, they appear almost black but the sun reveals the complex and deep colour of their petals, a dark red-pink with brown highlights. They bloom in June and July on stems that stand over 1 metre (3 feet) above the ground. This very beautiful variety is ideal in large flower borders, planted in small groups with bushes or delicate flowers. Asian lilies are floriferous and easy to grow in humus-rich and light soil.

Description

Lilium 'Royal Kiss' is a large, dramatic and fascinating hybrid of Asian lilies. This beautiful plant has spectacular, very dark flowers which appear almost black in partial shade and when backlit. When sunlight hits them, the true dark red-purple colour of their delicately recurved petals is revealed. They bloom at the beginning of summer, on stems that proudly stand over 1 metre (3 feet) tall. A magnificent variety, ideal for large flower borders. Plant it in small groups, where you can admire its extraordinary colour even from a distance. It is a robust and easy-to-grow plant, excellent in flower beds or bouquets.

Lilium 'Royal Kiss' is a deciduous bulbous plant, with an imposing, narrow and very upright shape, which belongs to the lily family. This variety will reach a height of 105 cm (41in) when in bloom, getting stronger over the years, and the clump will spread indefinitely over time, with the bulbs producing bulblets through vegetative multiplication. The spectacular flowering takes place in June-July, earlier or later depending on the region. About ten flowers measuring 12-13 cm (5in) in diameter appear in umbels, well-displayed along sturdy stems. They have a very silky finish and an astonishing colour which is a mix of red, deep purple, black and plum highlights, with a red glow in the centre. When fully open, purple stamens with orange pollen-covered anthers can be seen. They are magnificent and slightly fragrant. The tall violet stems of this lily are covered with alternate, dark green, narrow and shiny leaves, which remain ornamental for a long time.

This plant likes rich humus, neutral to slightly acidic, well-drained and light soil that remains slightly moist in summer. You can grow it with perennial plants or low-density shrubs such as dwarf Japanese maples or deciduous azaleas, as it enjoys having its base slightly shaded. These will help prevent the stems from bending in the wind. 'Royal Kiss', planted en masse in the border of a flower bed, pairs well with white or soft pink-flowered lily varieties to create a superb contrast. It will be enhanced by the airy flowering of paniculate gypsophila, chamomiles, and phlox, but will also blend beautifully with white hydrangeas. Lilies are ideal in flower beds, and of course in bouquets.

Planting and care

'Royal Kiss' likes humus-rich, fertile, well-drained, and light soil that remains slightly moist in summer. Plant the bulbs in full sun, preferably in spring, 15 cm (6in) deep in soil mixed with leaf compost. A sand layer will help to avoid rotting and attacks from slugs. Mark the planting location, as vegetation only starts in April.

Stake the stems when they reach 30 cm (12in) high. If red lily beetles appear, treat them immediately, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually, be careful as they drop as soon as they are touched. After flowering, it is a good idea to cut the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed beautiful during the summer.

Tips for planting lilies in compact soil: Bulbous lilies do not tolerate clay soils that suffocate them and cause rotting. In Eastern Europe, they are planted on "benches" built above ground level. These benches are made up of a layer of gravel, on which tightly packed branches are placed. Then cover everything with a thick layer of compost, 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) thick. Plant the bulbs in the compost, on which a few ground-cover plants can also crawl.

On the terrace, you can create sumptuous pots with lilies. Choose a container that is large and deep enough (at least 16 cm (6in) for one bulb). Fill it with a mixture of garden soil, leaf compost, and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs depending on the size of the pot, at a distance of 10-15 cm (4-6in), then water generously. Place the pots in a cool room or outside once the frost has passed. Apply liquid fertiliser twice a month until the flower buds appear.
