Description

The Lilium LA 'Trebbiano Gerrit Zalm' is a hybrid lily known for its particularly wide and bright flowers. Beautiful to behold, slightly fragrant, arranged in umbels on long stems, they are perfect for floral compositions. The plant blooms in July, 12 to 13 weeks after planting the bulb. Best planted in full sun, in good horticultural soil, in a pot or in the ground.

The 'Gerrit Zalm' Lily is a Dutch horticultural creation by Vletter Den Haan Beheer BV dating back to 2003. It is a bulbous plant with deciduous vegetation from the lily family. It belongs to a group of hybrids originating from Asian species such as Lilium longiflorum. Highly valued in floristry, these hybrids are renowned for their large, long-lasting flowers oriented upwards. Trebbiano 'Gerrit Zalm' is distinguished by large flowers approximately 21.5 cm wide, with elegantly recurved petals. Its unique colour combines a pale greenish-yellow inside and outside the petals, enhanced by veins of an intense yellow-green. The edges and tips of the petals, in a light yellow-green, frame a throat of a similar tone, creating a delicate and luminous effect. This variety also features styles of an intense yellow-green, moderate brown pollen, and a dark pinkish-yellow stigma. Supported by green stems 1.10 m to 1.30 m tall (depending on bulb size), slightly darker at the base, this plant produces six to seven flowers per stem, emerging from slightly velvety floral buds. This elegant, spotless lily adds a touch of sophistication to bouquets with its subtle shades and graceful form. The long, glossy, narrow lanceolate green leaves are veined with parallel veins. The vegetation dries in autumn as the bulb enters dormancy. Lily bulbs are reserve organs with fleshy, overlapping scales.

Longiflorum hybrid lilies like 'Trebbiano Gerrit Zalm' can be easily "forced" by planting them early in the season in a veranda or warm room. The soil should remain moist throughout the growth and flowering period. In the garden, you can pair this 'Gerrit Zalm' variety with perennial plants such as Echinacea 'Green Twister' turning from chartreuse green to pink-red, Heuchera 'Lime Marmalade' with lemon green leaves, and Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Golden Arrow' with golden leaves and fine red floral spikes.

Lilies appreciate shade at their feet, and neighbouring plants will help prevent stems from bending in the wind.

Planting and care

The Lilium 'Trebbiano Gerrit Zalm' prefers soils that are moist and rich in humus, it does not appreciate very dry, poor, or poorly drained and very clayey soils. It is a variety that can withstand frosts of around -17°C. You will plant it in the sun, in spring or early autumn, burying the bulbs 15 cm deep (about two to three times the size of the bulb) in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a pocket of sand to prevent rot and slug attacks, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as the vegetation only starts in April.

Growing in a deep pot allows the plant to overwinter in an unheated, cool, but frost-free location. This method also allows to "force" the bulb, meaning to advance the start of vegetation and flowering period. To do this, the pot will be stored in a very bright and slightly heated location before the beginning of spring.

When the stems reach 30 cm in height, discreetly stake them. If red insects appear, treat them immediately, as they are lily beetles whose larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to manually catch them, be careful, they drop as soon as they are touched, so place a box underneath. After flowering, it is useful to cut the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed beautiful during the summer.
