Thanks to the individuals (Laurent for order preparation and Sonia from the shipping department), the bulb I received appears to be healthy. Planted near the "New Imagine" rose bush, I am now patiently awaiting spring growth (or not)...

Description

'P320 JW10' hybrid martagon lily is a brand new variety with beautiful deep purple flowers that tend towards burgundy. Each bulb forms a spectacular flower stalk, bearing many pendulous, slightly fragrant flowers with recurved petals that have a satin texture. It is reasonably sized and can be grown in the garden and in a pot, allowing for a closer admiration of its amazing flowers. Although it takes a bit longer to establish, it will then faithfully flower every year for the proud gardener.

Lilium martagon 'P320 JW10'' belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is a deciduous bulbous plant with narrow and upright tufted foliage from spring onwards. This variety will reach between 80 cm (32in) and 1.10 m (4ft) high when in flower. Its growth will spread indefinitely over time, with bulbs producing bulblets through vegetative multiplication. Its particularly colourful flowers bloom in June-July. Each flower stalk bears many 5 cm (2in) in diameter flowers, in clusters, hanging towards the ground. Their thick and slightly glossy petals become reflexed when fully open. The base colour is a very dark red, mottled and speckled with very dark brown. It harmonizes wonderfully with the prominent orange stamens. This flowering attracts a large number of pollinating insects. The leaves of this lily are dark green and lanceolate in shape. This hybrid is a very long-lived plant that naturalises over time. The vegetation completely dries up in winter.

You can grow this P320 JW10 lily with perennial plants in your garden, as lilies appreciate having their base in the shade. Grow it in a pot to bring it closer to your terrace or window borders, so that you can fully enjoy this exceptional flowering. The warm colours of this martagon lily harmonize with whites as well as the entire range of yellow to red or purple tones. To play with colour contrast, combine it with the blue flowers of salvias or catmints, for example. It looks stunning with the Sunny Morning martagon lily with its copper and golden flowers!

Planting and care

The 'P320 JW10' hybrid martagon lily establishes itself a bit more slowly than Asiatic, trumpet, or Oriental lilies. It may take an additional season before flowering, and planting conditions must be right. "Martagon" lilies sulk when moved and need time to settle. It must have very good drainage, rocky soil suits them very well so that the bulbs are not in an overly moist substrate during their dormancy period after flowering. It is strongly advised not to use standard compost for martagon lilies or their hybrids, but a well-rotted compost or leaf mold can be added on the surface in autumn.

This lily prefers humus and moist soils, and limestone is not a problem if the soil is rich. It should be planted in partial shade or non-scorching sun, preferably in October or spring, with the bulbs 15 cm (6in) deep in a mixture of soil and leaf mold. You can surround them with a layer of sand to prevent rotting and slug attacks. Mark the planting location, as vegetation only starts in April. Staking is not necessary. If red lily beetles appear, treat them immediately, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually but be careful as they drop as soon as they are touched.

After flowering, it is a good idea to cut the faded flower stalks halfway to keep the bed beautiful during the summer. Your lilies will be available from early October. Lilies are also well-suited for pot cultivation. Plant 1 to 5 bulbs in a deep pot. Water lightly and place your pots in a frost-free area. Bring them out in spring and enjoy them on your terrace!
