Description

The 'Soliman' Bean is an improvement of the dwarf French bean 'Talisman'. It is a dwarf variety of the mangetout type renowned for its productivity and the quality of its beans. It produces extra-fine beans with long pods of 16 to 18 cm, without strings, fleshy and crunchy, containing variegated brown grains. The plant is easy to grow and does not require staking. Sow from April to July to start harvesting 55 to 60 days later. The 'Soliman' Bean is very versatile in the kitchen: you can enjoy it fresh or easily preserve it in jars or frozen.

The French bean is a much-loved vegetable in gardens, as it is easy to grow. Discovered in the New World and then acclimatised in Europe in the 16th century, it has become essential in kitchens worldwide. Italians pioneered the consumption of the whole pod by picking it immature. Primitive varieties are all climbers and require staking, but dwarf varieties like 'Soliman' have been selected for practical reasons. Immature green pods are rich in vitamins and minerals.

The harvest of young pods begins 60 days after sowing and should be done every 2 or 3 days for extra fine varieties. Freezing is the most common preservation method: simply trim, wash, blanch the beans for 5 to 6 minutes, plunge them in cold water, dry them, then freeze them. Canning, although less common, is appreciated for its taste qualities.

Beans, like all Fabaceae, fix nitrogen from the air in the soil, thus helping to regenerate soils. They pair well with squash, corn, aubergine, carrots, cabbage, potatoes, and radishes, but not with alliums or fennel. Spraying with nettle manure can strengthen the plants and combat aphids.

Planting and care

Soil preparation: Beans like light, moist, but not wet soils rich in nutrients. They do not like soils that are too chalky or too acidic. It is therefore necessary to prepare the soil well by digging it deeply to 20 cm without turning it over. Then it should be amended with compost or well-decomposed manure. Do not sow beans on soil that has been recently limed, as this causes hardening and loss of the pod's taste.

Sowing under cloches: Under cloches or tunnels, beans can be sown as early as mid-March. Beans are sensitive vegetables, requiring the soil to have reached a minimum of 15°C. Cloches should be oriented south or west. Only ventilate them during the warm hours of the day. Remove the protection only when frost is no longer a concern.

Sowing in open ground: Sow from April in southern regions or from May as soon as the soil is sufficiently warm and frost is no longer a concern. Dig furrows 3 to 4 cm deep spaced 40 cm apart. Sow your seeds 5 to 7 cm apart or in clusters of 4 to 5 seeds spaced 40 cm apart in all directions. Cover the soil and lightly tamp down with a rake. When the plants reach a height of 20 cm, earth them up to ensure good support.

The first harvests take place around 60 days after sowing and continue until late October. Sow beans every 15 days for a continuous harvest until the end of autumn.
