Description

The 'Maxi' Bean is a dwarf variety of french bean, producing long fleshy, dark green pods of 18 to 20 cm. These pods are early and well separated from the foliage, easy to pick. Ideal for freezing or canning, this tasty variety can be consumed at all stages, both as snap beans and as pods. Highly productive, sow from April to July and harvest from July to October. Seeds from Organic Agriculture.

The bean is an easy-to-grow vegetable, appreciated for its reliability: the first harvests occur 60 days after sowing. It is versatile and can be consumed for its pods or seeds, fresh or dried.

Discovered in the New World and introduced to Europe in the 16th century, the bean has become an essential legume worldwide. Dwarf beans have been developed to simplify cultivation, but all retain tendrils capable of clinging to a support.

Harvest young pods every 2 to 3 days, and harvest dry seeds by hanging the plants in a dry place.

Preservation of pods is mainly done by freezing or canning, preserving their taste and nutritional qualities.

The gardener's tip: beans enrich the soil with nitrogen, making them an excellent choice for crop rotation. They pair well with squashes, corn, carrots and aubergines, but avoid alliums and fennel which inhibit their growth.

Planting and care

Soil preparation: Beans thrive in light, moist, but not wet soils rich in nutrients. They do not appreciate soils that are too chalky or too acidic. It is therefore important to prepare the soil well by digging deeply to 20 cm without turning the earth. Then amend it with compost or well-rotted manure. Do not sow beans on soil that has been recently limed, as this causes hardening and reduces the taste quality of the pods.

Sowing under glass: Under glass or in tunnels, bean sowing can start as early as mid-March. Beans are sensitive to cold, requiring the soil to have reached a minimum of 15°C. The glasshouses should be oriented full South or full West. Only ventilate them during the hot hours of the day. Remove the protections only when frost is no longer a concern.

Direct sowing: Sowing can be done from April in Southern regions or from May once the soil has warmed up enough and frost is no longer a concern. Dig furrows 3 to 4 cm deep spaced 40 cm apart. Sow your seeds spacing them 5 to 7 cm apart or in clusters of 4 to 5 seeds spaced 40 cm apart in all directions. Cover the soil and lightly tamp down with a rake. When the plants reach a height of 20 cm, hill up the plants to support them well.

The first harvests occur approximately 60 days after sowing, continuing until the end of October. You can sow beans every 15 days for a continuous harvest until the end of autumn.

There are different types of support for climbing beans: the Canadian tent frame, tipi, on nets or grids. Any tall structure can become the support for this type of bean, giving the cultivation a very aesthetic appearance.
