Description

Elne celery is a descendant of a plant called marsh parsley, native to the Mediterranean. Celery was not considered a vegetable but rather a medicinal plant until the Renaissance.

Celery leaves are used as a seasoning in soups, stews, and to flavor certain sauces and stuffings. Raw, tender stalks, finely chopped, can be added to salads. Celery also has many virtues; it is anti-rheumatic, appetizing, digestive, remineralizing, and contains vitamins as well as copper, iron, and iodine.

Celery requires a significant supply of well-decomposed compost (5 kg per m²), wood ash, and manure. Foliar fertilization with lithothamnium powder can also be done every three weeks.

Harvest: Elne celery is harvested by cutting the entire stalks at ground level as needed. Elne celery is sensitive to frost.

Storage: Before the first frost, starting from the end of October, the stalks are uprooted with their roots and stored in trenches or in a cellar in sand.

Gardener's tip: Celery is particularly demanding in terms of water and nutrients. Provide a good mulch to maintain moisture at the base of the plant and a good supply of organic matter.

Planting and care

Sowing

From February to April, you can sow on a warm bed or in seed trays, in a greenhouse or in a bright and heated room.

From mid-April to the end of May, you can sow in a well-exposed nursery.

The soil or compost must be kept consistently moist, and the sowings can be covered with several layers of wet newspaper until germination. The growth is very slow at the beginning. The temperature must be above 15°C (59°F). Germination occurs in 12 to 15 days.

Before planting, usually in May-June, transplant the young plants once in the nursery when they have 3 leaves. Space them 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4in) apart in all directions. Be careful to remove the tips of the rootlets and the main root. During final planting, space them 35 cm (14in) apart in all directions.

Maintenance

To prevent diseases that attack celery, such as mildew or rust, it is important to regularly hoe and weed to ensure good soil ventilation and practice crop rotation every 3 to 4 years. A preventive treatment with Bordeaux mixture is effective against fungal diseases.

Watering should be generous and frequent. A blanket bog covering the soil is beneficial.
