Description

Chinese Chives, also known as Chivail or Garlic Chives, is a perennial aromatic plant prized for its mild and slightly garlicky flavour. Originating from Asia, it is widely used in cooking, particularly its flat and tender leaves, as well as its white star-shaped flowers, which are edible. It is versatile and adds a refined touch to your dishes, whether they are Asian or Western. Sow from February to May - Harvest from late May to September.

With its dense tufts of foliage reaching 70 cm in height, Chinese Chives (Allium tuberosum) resemble a larger version of the classic chives. Its leaves are flat, long, and tender, while its delicate and star-shaped white flowers are arranged in small umbels. Although perennial, this plant is often grown for two to three years only as it tends to weaken over time. It belongs to the amaryllidaceae family, just like garlic and onions.

Flavour and uses:
Mild and subtle, reminiscent of garlic, Chinese Chives are perfect in salads, omelettes, soups, or to enhance Asian dishes such as dumplings and stir-fries. Its edible flowers are ideal for decorating or flavouring your meals.

Harvest:
Harvest from May to September simply by cutting the leaves at the base with scissors. Regular cutting promotes regrowth and ensures abundant foliage.

Storage: Chives can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator or for a few months by drying or freezing. However, to fully enjoy its aroma, it is best to consume it freshly picked.

Gardener's tip: to reduce watering, we recommend, from late May, mulching the soil with thin successive layers of grass clippings, preferably mixed with dead leaves. This protection, which helps the soil stay moist, also reduces weeding.

Planting and care

Sowing of organic Chinese Chives:

The germination of Chinese Chives occurs at a temperature of around 18°C. Sprouting takes between 20 and 25 days.

Sow under shelter or in an open ground seed bed:

Starting from the end of February, in a cool place indoors or in a greenhouse, in a tray with drainage holes filled with a seed compost, sow the seeds at a depth of 2 to 3 mm, spacing them 5 to 7 cm apart. Water with a very fine rose. When your young plants have 4 leaves, transplant 3 or 4 plants into a pot to plant in the garden in autumn or the following spring.

Sowing in an open ground seed bed is done later, in well-warmed soil, usually around mid-May in the same method as sowing under shelter.

During the final planting, maintain a distance of 40 cm between each row and 20 cm between each plant in the row. We recommend planting them in different areas of the garden: in the sun for spring harvests and in partial shade for summer harvests.

Cultivation:

Chinese Chives thrive in the sun or partial shade, in moderately rich soil. If compost is needed, it should be applied in autumn, in the form of very mature compost (definitely not manure), by raking to a depth of 5 cm, after, as for all vegetable crops, thoroughly loosening the soil. It is a plant that is quite tolerant of soil pH, it will do very well if it is between 5.5 and 7.5.

Multiplying Chinese Chives is very easy by dividing clumps, from March to May and then from September to October.
