Description

Ordinary marjoram is a fragrant perennial herb that is not very hardy and can be grown in the ground or in pots. Sow from March to May and harvest as needed from May to September. The fresh or dried leaves, with a slightly camphor scent, are perfect for flavouring soups and marinades, or can be consumed as an infusion.

Marjoram has been used as a condiment and for its medicinal properties since ancient times. Highly aromatic, it is particularly well-suited for dishes with sauces, as well as marinades and pizzas when dried. It can be grown in the vegetable garden, in pots, or as a border plant. Sow in spring, either in a nursery or directly in the ground.

Harvest: You can pick marjoram leaves as needed, starting from May/June. It is best to harvest in the morning to preserve the best flavour and aroma.

Storage: This herb can be kept fresh for a week in a glass of water or in a plastic bag in the crisper of your refrigerator. For longer storage (up to a year), dry the harvested marjoram upside down in a well-ventilated place, then place it in tightly closed jars.

Gardener's tip: Marjoram enjoys the company of chervil.

Planting and care

Sowing marjoram:

Sowing takes place under shelter in March - April or directly in the field from mid-May. Trace rows 30 cm (12in) apart, sow in holes of 4 to 5 seeds distributed every 15 cm (6in). After germination, thin out to keep only one plant per hole.

Position in the sun. The soil must be well-drained, light, and rather dry. Add a little sand if your soil tends to be clayey.

Growing marjoram:

Mulch the marjoram with stones to retain heat. In pots, remove any stagnant water that may accumulate. Weed regularly and harvest regularly to encourage the development of new shoots. As soon as flowering begins, cut the plants back by two-thirds to obtain a second harvest.

Marjoram does not like the cold, so is often cultivated in Europe as an annual. In regions with mild winters you can keep it going for longer by mulching the plants in autumn to protect them from the cold.

Marjoram has good resistance to diseases. However, if the soil is too wet, the roots will rot. Pest insects are few and rare (aphids and red spider mites).
