Description
The Lanceolate Plantain is a native plant long recognised for its medicinal properties. This perennial forms clumps of long lanceolate, veined leaves, topped with floral stems bearing spikes of small yellowish, honey-producing flowers. The whole plant is edible, but its leaves are mainly consumed raw in salads, soups, or as an infusion. Plantain is renowned for its benefits for the respiratory system. When crushed, it effectively relieves insect bites. Sow broadcast from May to September, and harvest the leaves all year round.
The Lanceolate Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) is a perennial plant also known as Narrow Plantain, Five-seam Herb, or Five-rib Herb. Native to Eurasia and belonging to the Plantaginaceae family, it grows in short grass, on compact or sandy soils, as well as in fallow lands and urban lawns. This plant forms a bushy rosette of narrow leaves marked by deep parallel veins, topped with upright floral stems. Depending on soil and exposure conditions, it can reach between 20 and 50 cm in height. The tiny flowers, gathered in a cylindrical spike, are highly prized by bees.
In the garden, this herb is cultivated for its tender young leaves, which can be consumed raw in salads or cooked like spinach. It is also used to treat minor injuries, such as insect bites, thanks to its emollient and astringent properties.
Harvest: young leaves can be harvested all year round as needed.
Storage: leaves are best consumed immediately after harvesting.
Gardener's tip: like corn salad, plantain should be sown in uncompacted soil. If you have land tortoises, its good to know that the Lanceolate Plantain is among the wild plants that form the basis of their diet, just like dandelions or hawkbits.
Organic seeds come from plants grown organically and undergo no treatment after harvest. These seeds are suitable for organic vegetable growing.

Planting and care
Sowing:
Sow in a sunny location, from March to September, directly in place and in uncompacted soil. Water gently to keep the soil moist until germination, which takes about 2 to 3 weeks. After germination, thin out by keeping only one young plant every 30 cm in all directions.
The plantain adapts to various types of soil, whether compact, sandy, or poor, and prefers sunny or slightly shaded exposures. It is ow maintenance and tolerates drought once well established. Regular watering is recommended during the growth phase, and light weeding is sufficient to maintain vigorous plants.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
