Description
The Winter Wonder organic Butterhead Lettuce is a classic and resistant variety, appreciated for its ability to withstand light frosts. It produces well-formed, dense and voluminous heads, with slightly puckered leaves, of a beautiful light green. By sowing it in August, it is possible to harvest fresh salad as early as March. A safe bet for the organic vegetable garden, very easy to grow! It can be sown from August to October for a harvest from March to May.
The 'Winter Wonder' Lettuce is an old French variety that offers a crunchy texture and a slightly sweet mild flavour. It is ideal for making fresh salads or to accompany hot dishes such as pot-au-feu or winter soups. Its tender leaves can also be used in wraps or spring rolls.
The 'Winter Wonder' Lettuce is very hardy for a lettuce, down to -5°C to -7°C approximately, depending on conditions and growth stage. It is particularly suitable for temperate climates and mild winters, where it can remain in the ground with minimal protection, such as mulching or winter fleece. However, in regions with harsher winters, it is recommended to grow it under cover, such as a cold greenhouse or tunnel, to prevent prolonged frosts from damaging the leaves.
Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables for its freshness, crunchiness, taste and nutritional qualities. It can be eaten raw, in salads, but also cooked, braised or stewed, to accompany peas, for example. A leafy vegetable par excellence, Lettuce is an annual plant belonging to the large Asteraceae family. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that oozes when cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).
It is an essential vegetable in any respectable vegetable garden and there are so many varieties that it is possible to grow it almost all year round. Winter Lettuces are hardy and cold-resistant lettuces. Their growth is slower than Summer Lettuces, it is advisable to sow them in late summer / early autumn for a harvest the following spring.
Lettuce cultivation is easy as long as the planting schedule for each variety is respected. Its growth is rapid and it thrives in any soil, provided it is rich and remains moist.
Harvest: It is simply done with a knife when the Lettuces are well developed.
Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy its freshness to the fullest, we recommend consuming it just after harvesting. Freezing cooked Lettuce is possible.
Gardener's tip: slugs and snails love salad leaves. We recommend using a slug control product composed of ferric phosphate known as Ferramol. Unlike slug control products based on metaldehyde, which are dangerous for wildlife and polluting, Ferramol is natural, non-toxic and very effective provided you remember to "treat" your plot a few days before sowing and regularly as long as the slugs and snails are active.

Planting and care
Sowing:
The germination of the Winter WonderLettuce occurs at quite low temperatures, around 12-15°C, and takes on average 10 days.
Sow from August to October for a harvest from March to May.
On loosened and well-prepared soil, trace furrows spaced 30 cm apart, with a depth of 0.5 cm. Sow in a line, spacing the seeds 4 cm apart and cover. After emergence, when the plants are well developed, thin them out to leave only one plant every 30 cm.
Cultivation:
Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable, but it still requires humus-bearing soil, otherwise it tends to prematurely go to seed. It is advisable, preferably in autumn, to moderately enrich the soil with mature compost by raking to a depth of 5 cm, after having, as for any vegetable crop, thoroughly loosened the soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).
During cultivation, remember that Lettuce appreciates moist soils and make sure to water it regularly.
Lettuce is a good companion plant, it can easily be grown between other vegetables with slower growth such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers... Just avoid planting it near corn.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
