Description

Oriental Mesclun is an assortment of different lettuces such as Lettuce, Spinach, Mizuna Cabbage, Swiss Chard... that make up a mesclun with a unique taste, both sweet and spicy. This mixture is sown from March to July for harvesting at the young shoot stage.

This mixture is composed of: 15% Tat Soi Chinese Cabbage, 15% Mizuna Cabbage, 15% Osaka Segal Mustard, 10% Rhubarb Chard Swiss Chard with red stalk, 20% Moroccan Cressonnette Lettuce, 15% Red Salad Bowl Lettuce, 10% American Spinach. The seeds are from Organic Agriculture and are offered to you in a 3-meter tape: pre-spaced seeds are placed between two very thin layers of biodegradable fibers. This process is very practical, easy to implement, and avoids tedious thinning.

Mesclun, from the Provençal "mesclum" which means mixture, is a salad composed of different varieties, at least five for purists, such as Lettuce, Arugula, Lamb's Lettuce... Highly appreciated for its wide range of flavors, this little salad is generally harvested at the "young shoot" stage and can be consumed raw or cooked almost all year round.

Busy gardeners will appreciate these seed mixtures as much as gourmets, as they allow for a wide range of flavors with little expense and just one sowing.

These salads are called "cutting" because they usually have the characteristic of regrowing after harvesting, provided that the entire plant is not harvested.

Cultivating these mixtures is easy and space-saving, as they can generally be grown in a planter on a balcony or in restricted spaces such as square foot gardens.

Harvest: these salad mixtures are harvested as needed, at the juvenile or ripe stage. Harvesting is done with a knife and involves removing the leaves located on the periphery of the plant.

Storage: Mesclun can be stored for a few days in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, but whenever possible, consume it freshly picked to enjoy its freshness.

Gardener's tip: Flea beetles, tiny beetles, are fond of Rocket leaves, which are often part of Mesclun. They meticulously puncture the leaves in dry and hot weather. While spraying Tansy infusion can limit the damage, installing insect-proof netting from sowing is the most effective method of control while avoiding the use of insecticides, which, even of natural origin, have consequences on the balance of the garden.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Germination occurs at a temperature of approximately 16°C and takes an average of 10 days.

Sowing is done from March to July in full sun or partial shade, in moist, fertile, and well-prepared soil.

Directly in the ground during summer or under shelter (cold greenhouse, Nantes tunnel, frame) from autumn to the end of spring, trace furrows one centimeter deep, spaced 35 cm apart, and simply place the seed tape in the furrow. Cover with fine soil or compost and water thoroughly. Keep the soil moist until germination.

This mixture can also be grown in pots or in small spaces like square vegetable gardens.

In order to have these lettuces throughout the year or almost, consider spreading out your sowings over time.

Cultivation:

These little lettuces are not very demanding but still require humus-rich soil. It is advisable, preferably in autumn, to apply a moderate amount of well-rotted compost by scratching it into the soil to a depth of 5 cm, after having loosened the soil, as is the case for any vegetable crop.
