Description

The 'Lollo Rossa' lettuce, a fringed "cutting" lettuce of red colour.

This crispy variety will add colour to your salads. The leaves are tender and variously cut and curled. Recommended by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany, it is a source of vitamin A and beta-carotene. Originally from southern Europe and Asia, the 'Lollo Rossa' lettuce has received an award from the Royal Horticultural Society. This variety has the advantage of being able to be grown in small gardens. It reaches a height of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) when mature.

Sow the seeds in a fresh and rich soil; Remember to moisten the soil well before sowing in case of drought. The sowing should be done continuously, so sow a few plants every couple weeks. Sow outside from March to July every two weeks for a harvest 8 to 12 weeks later.

Planting and care

Sow in cool and rich soil, finely raked and amended, from March to July every two weeks. It's an easy plant to grow. Cover the sowing with a thin layer of soil and gently press. The seedlings will appear after one to two weeks. You can thin out the dense seedlings, leaving only one plant every 15 cm (6in) or so. Water regularly with a fine spray. Reduce watering in the greenhouse to avoid "damping off" of the lettuces. You can start harvesting 8 to 12 weeks after sowing.
