Description

The 'Yellow Pear' tomato is an old variety of cherry tomato, known since the early 19th century, especially in Italy. Its plants produce long clusters of about ten small yellow-orange fruits, weighing between 10 and 15 g. These pear-shaped tomatoes measure about 5 cm long by 2 to 3 cm in diameter. Their firm and sweet flesh, with a hint of acidity, is enjoyed in apetisers, picnics, or even in preserves. Very popular with children, these playful and colourful tomatoes add a touch of magic to the garden.

With indeterminate growth, this variety can reach between 1.20 m and 2 m in height. Remember to stake and train the plants from planting to turn them into decorative elements in the vegetable garden. Sow the rewarding and productive Yellow Pear tomato under cover between March and April for an abundant harvest from June to September. Accessible to amateur or experienced gardeners, it brings a beautiful combination of flavours and aesthetics to the garden.

Origins and characteristics of the tomato
The tomato, originating from South and Central America, was already cultivated by the Incas long before the arrival of the Conquistadors. Initially used for its ornamental and medicinal virtues, this fruit took time to establish itself in cooking due to its resemblance to toxic plants like mandrake. It was only in the 20th century that it became an essential food. With all shapes, colours, and sizes, the tomato offers an impressive diversity of varieties. Ancient varieties, with indeterminate growth, can live up to two years in a tropical climate, while modern varieties, with determinate growth, are more compact and easier to grow.

Nutritional benefits, cultivation, and harvest
The tomato is appreciated for its richness in vitamin C, lycopene – a powerful antioxidant that is released more through cooking – and trace elements. Low in calories, it is suitable for all cuisines: salads, sauces, or preserves.

Cultivation requires plenty of sun and heat. Depending on the varieties, 50 to 100 days separate transplanting from harvest. The fruit is picked when fully coloured and slightly softened, keeping the stalk for better storage.

To prevent deficiencies like "blossom end rot", a comfrey maceration is ideal. Burying the plants up to the first leaves stimulates root production for an abundant harvest. For a more resilient garden, it is advisable to grow several varieties each year.

Planting and care

Soil preparation: Tomato plants Yellow Pear are easy to grow. Sunlight and warmth play a crucial role in their success. They can thrive in any type of soil, although they prefer rich and well-draining ones. The substrate can be enriched with a bit of sand if it is too compact.

Sowing under glass: From mid-February to May, sow indoors or in heated greenhouses in trays at around 20°C. Bury the seeds under 5 to 7 mm of seed compost, as they need darkness to germinate. Do not use fertiliser at this stage, as you may risk burning the future roots. Tomato plant growth is very rapid: tomato seeds usually sprout within two weeks on average. Do not discard a tray if no germination has occurred during this time, as some varieties are slow to germinate. When the plants have reached about fifteen cm, consider transplanting them.

Transplanting into open ground: Once all risk of frost has passed, usually around mid-May, transplant your plants into open ground. Choose the sunniest and warmest spots in the garden. At the base of a south-facing wall is an ideal position. Loosen the soil and dig a hole at least 3 to 4 times the volume of the root system of your plant. Add some well-rotted compost at the bottom. Plant your young plant, which can be buried up to the first leaves, then backfill. Firm the soil, create a basin around the plant, then water generously. Be careful not to wet the leaves to protect your plants from fungal diseases.

Maintenance: Adding mulch at the base of your plants helps maintain some moisture and reduces the need for weeding. Tomato plants do not require a lot of watering, as their root system delves deep to find available resources. Water generously only in case of prolonged drought.

Care

Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Pruning instructions Some gardeners are not in favour of pruning tomato plants. Others advocate for removing the leaves in direct contact with the soil to limit the risks of fungal diseases. They also suggest removing the side shoots, which are all the new shoots that develop in the axils of the leaves, as they appear, to concentrate the sap on the branches and main fruit clusters. The goal is to obtain fewer fruits, but of larger sizes. Others remove the leaves around the fruits to give them direct access to sunlight. We believe that systematically practicing one or the other of these methods may not necessarily be suitable for the diversity of situations encountered in gardens. Depending on the exposure, the variety planted, the region, the type of soil, etc., each of these approaches may have its relevance. Above all, we recommend finding a balance that only you are able to determine based on the specific constraints of your garden.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
