Very disappointed with this purchase, I did not expect to receive coated seeds and yet I received 12 coated seeds in a kind of blue shell. Only one germinated and eventually grew into a plant with 4 leaves, but the top seemed "knotted" and it never grew any further. A total waste, money wasted and a year without broccoli, time lost can never be regained, especially when it comes to seedlings.

Description

The Verdia F1 Broccoli Cabbage is a variety that produces beautiful compact bouquets with a fine grain. It is a vigorous broccoli with a very good taste. Sow from March to July for a harvest from June to October.

Offering beautiful firm bouquets, mostly green but sometimes purplish or white, the Broccoli Cabbage, commonly called Broccoli, is a vegetable whose flowers are consumed just before they bloom. It belongs to the large family of Brassicaceae (formerly Cruciferae) and bears the Latin name Brassica oleracea italica.

Although introduced to France by Catherine de Medici, under the name Italian Asparagus, Broccoli has only been cultivated on a large scale in France since the 1980s.

Originally from southern Italy, this cabbage, with a mild flavor, is now highly appreciated as it lends itself to various preparations. It is consumed quickly steamed and then prepared in various ways: quickly sautéed, gratin, quiche, puree, soup, etc. It is a low-calorie vegetable and rich in vitamin C.

Like almost all cabbages (Brussels sprouts being the exception), Broccoli Cabbage is a demanding vegetable, requiring excellent base fertilization and regular moisture.

NB: This variety is labeled F1 for "F1 hybrid" because it is a variety resulting from the cross-breeding of carefully selected parents to combine their qualities. This results in a variety that can be particularly flavorful and/or early while being resistant to certain diseases. Sometimes criticized or wrongly associated with GMOs, F1 hybrid seeds are interesting both for their homogeneity and their resistance, but unfortunately, their qualities do not pass on to the next generations: it will therefore not be possible to recover the seeds for a subsequent sowing.

Harvest: Broccoli is harvested by cutting, with a knife, in two stages: first, the terminal bouquet is harvested, then the lateral bouquets.

Storage: Broccoli Cabbage does not keep very well. It is best to consume it quickly after harvesting. It can be kept for a few days in the refrigerator. You can also freeze it after blanching it for 3 minutes in salted boiling water.

Gardener's tip: In recent years, the Cabbage Midge (Contarinia nasturtii), a small winged piercing and sucking fly, has been causing havoc on Broccoli Cabbages in certain regions such as Brittany. We recommend opting for prevention by installing an insect-proof cover, tightly secured on market garden hoops, throughout the flight period, from mid-May to mid-July. These covers are easy to set up and reusable to protect, for example, your carrot and leek crops.

Planting and care

Sowing :

The germination temperature of the Verdia F1 Broccoli Cabbage is around 15° and takes about 14 days.

It is sown from March to July for a harvest from June to October.

You can proceed with direct sowing in place or prepare seedlings that will then be installed in the garden in their final position.

Seedling preparation: at home or in a heated shelter, from late autumn to late spring, or in a cold greenhouse or nursery for the rest of the year, sow the Broccoli Cabbage seeds to a depth of 1 cm (0in) in a good seed compost. Lightly cover with compost or vermiculite. Don't forget to keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged!

When the young plants appear strong enough to handle, transplant them into pots and, for sowing in a heated shelter, gradually acclimatize them to cooler temperatures before transplanting them to the garden, when there is no longer any risk of frost.

Direct sowing: In well-amended and finely worked soil, make furrows about one centimeter deep, spaced 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) apart. Sow the seeds and cover them with a thin layer of fine soil, when the seedlings are well developed, thin them out, keeping only one plant every 50 cm (20in) or so.

Cultivation :

Broccoli Cabbage is a demanding vegetable that requires well-manured soil, rich in nitrogen and potash. It is advisable to make a generous compost application (about 3/4 kg per m2), by scratching it into the soil to a depth of 5 cm (2in), preferably in autumn, after loosening the soil, as with any vegetable crop. It is not very tolerant of soil pH, which should be between 5.6 and 6.5. In acidic soil, care should be taken to gradually raise the pH by adding calcium in the form of Dolomite or Lime.

Broccoli Cabbage, like all cabbages, is quite susceptible to diseases such as Clubroot and pests (Cabbage White Butterfly, Cabbage Fly, Flea Beetle, Leaf Miner), so it is very important, for this crop, to observe crop rotations.

It is beneficial to associate it with many vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce. But avoid growing it next to other Brassicas as well as zucchini, fennel, lamb's lettuce, leek, and strawberry.
