Description

The Red Perilla is an annual aromatic plant that reaches a height of 45 to 60 cm. It is cultivated for its leaves, which can be consumed raw in salads and crudités, as well as cooked. Its flavor is a delicate blend of basil, mint, cumin, and lemon balm. Sow from April to August. Harvest from May to September.

Originally from southern China and Myanmar, this annual plant has a remarkable aroma. All parts of the plant are edible. In Asian cuisine, it is used as a green vegetable, and its leaves can be eaten raw in salads.

Harvesting: Harvest the leaves as needed.

Storage: Harvest the whole plant, including the flowers, and let it dry for later use.

Gardener's tip: Red Perilla prefers light and moderate humidity, good drainage, and rich, sunny soil.

The untreated or 'NT' seeds come from conventionally grown plants (often with the use of pesticides), but they do not undergo any treatment after harvest. These seeds are allowed in organic farming when organic seeds are out of stock.

Planting and care

Sowing: To promote sowing, soak the seeds overnight. Sow in spring in buckets at the surface of the soil: the seeds need light to germinate. Thin out as soon as the plants are manageable, keeping only the strongest ones. Transplant as soon as the risk of frost has passed, at a distance of 25 cm in all directions, in a sunny location with a humid atmosphere.

Maintenance: During cultivation, regularly pinch the stems to promote compact and bushy growth. Apply mulch at the base to maintain soil moisture and compete with weeds. Water regularly to keep the substrate moist but not wet.
