Description

The Aubrieta or Aubrieta 'Pixie Pearls' is a bright variety of aubrieta, covered in spring with a multitude of small white flowers. It is a small perennial ground cover, ideal for covering the ground. Throughout the rest of the year, its evergreen leaves adorn rockeries and borders. Very hardy and low-maintenance, it fits in between taller perennials to fill the soil in borders and foregrounds of flower beds.

Aubrieta hybrids belong to the brassicaceae family, mostly derived from Aubrieta deltoidea, native to southeastern Europe and Turkey. They are plants with a compact and spreading habit, forming cushions that do not exceed 15 cm in height, spreading quite rapidly over a diameter of 60 cm. Their semi-evergreen to evergreen leaves, depending on the climate, are slightly silvery green and oval-shaped. In summer, the foliage sometimes turns yellow, without affecting the plant's health, as it will green up with the first rain. The small leaves taper to a point and have roughly serrated margins. In spring, between late March and late May, the 'Pixie Pearls' variety is adorned with numerous small four-petaled flowers, in a beautiful pure white color, with yellow stamens.

Easy to grow and highly hardy, with a hardiness level of -20°C, the Aubrieta 'Pixie Pearls' thrives in light and well-drained soil, even limestone soil. Ideal for rockeries, walls, borders, and paving, it loves sunny exposures. Its colonizing potential makes it a good plant for slopes and any soil, as long as it is not too dry. It also makes a good ground cover in pots, planters, and hanging baskets, with its stems gracefully cascading. Pair it with Sedums, Geranium cinereum, Dianthus, or Erigeron karvinskianus. Plant it in a white garden as well, at the base of gauras for example.
