Of the 250 species that make up the genus Calamagrostis, very few are interesting. However, those that have real ornamental value are remarkably beautiful. The deciduous foliage withers quite late in the season and the new foliage appears early in the season. They prefer dry and well-drained soils in warm locations, but also adapt well to damp soils, even clay soils, provided that they do not turn into a waterlogged and muddy marsh in winter.
