Description

Solidago 'Ducky' is a new variety of hybrid Goldenrod that lives up to the common name of golden sheaf. This compact perennial does not wilt and is adorned with generous clusters of bright lemon yellow flowers for more than a month in the second half of summer. Its moderate growth and non-invasive nature make it suitable even for small gardens. A superb and easy-to-grow plant in the sun, in any moist garden soil.

Solidago Ducky is a recent horticultural hybrid. This woody-based perennial belongs to the aster family and is a cousin of daisies and sunflowers. This variety is mainly distinguished by a much more compact habit than the wild species from which it originates, and it does not spread through suckering. When in flower, this plant will not exceed 70 cm (28in) hogh and 50 cm (20in) wide, and forms a dense clump with flexible stems and leaves. Light yellow flowers are produced from July to September, depending on the climate. These are light panicles of tiny flat flowers organized in branched and feathery spikes at the end of sturdy stems, bearing opposite, elongated. rough, light green leaves with slightly toothed edges. The vegetation of this goldenrod disappears in late autumn and reappears in spring.

Thes perennial plants are appreciated for their late flowering. Modern varieties of goldenrods have mostly replaced the old invasive and uninteresting varieties. They are robust plants that only dislike excessive heat and drought, which can promote powdery mildew on the foliage. Solidago 'Ducky' can be planted alone or in groups of three , close to asters (Aster Little Carlow, Aster Blue Wonder), cosmos, veronicas (Veronica Blue Candels, Veronica longifolia Marietta) for example. Its flowers hold well when cut, and can be dried before fully blooming to integrate them into dry compositions.
