Description

The Daylily 'Piano Man' is a splendid variety with highly contrasting colours. The flowers are cream white with a plum violet eye and a green throat. The undulated petal edges are highlighted with a violet edge towards the throat. It is called the daylily because its flower is ephemeral, but the buds constantly renew themselves throughout the summer. The daylily is a trouble-free flower, guaranteed to succeed. Invite it into your garden!

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Hemerocallidaceae family. These are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. 'Piano Man' forms a clump that reaches 70 to 75 cm (28 to 30in) in height, with a spread of 50 cm (20in). The flowers are slightly fragrant, continuously blooming on sturdy stems throughout the summer. The linear foliage is evergreen. The flowers are single, with a fleshy substance, measuring 10 to 14 cm (4 to 6in) in diameter. Daylilies have short rhizomes and fleshy roots.

Very easy to grow, these perennials thrive in both shade and sun. Some can be a little invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years after flowering in autumn. The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours and ability to tolerate any environment, as well as its lack of modesty. It has a beautiful exuberance that blends well with other perennials. Plant them in the background of your flower beds. Consider summer-flowering bulbs and the graceful habit of grasses to lighten up your compositions. If you want to decorate balconies and patios with a daylily, you must provide large pots with a minimum depth of 30 cm (12in) and prefer dwarf varieties. Evergreen cultivars are reputed to be less hardy, but 'Piano Man' defies this adage, as it perfectly withstands negative temperatures. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Many varieties have been developed in Japan, where they are very popular. The flowers of these plants come in a wide range of colours and forms. Over sixty thousand cultivars, primarily resulting from hybridisation by gardening enthusiasts, are listed, appreciated, and studied by international Hemerocallis societies.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Piano Man ' in well-draining garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This will allow your perennial to withstand summer droughts and winter frosts. This variety is easy to grow and not susceptible to pests or diseases, so no treatment is required, and rodents are not attracted to it. Daylilies can grow both in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight sufficient—plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If planting multiple plants, ensure enough space between them, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, ensure the soil is moderately moist, but do not overwater. It is advisable to divide the plants, preferably in autumn after flowering.
