More information

The 'Pierre de Ronsard' standard rose forms a highly ornamental weeping tree. It is adorned with nostalgic roses displaying a magnificent deep pink colour, doubled with warm silver pink, grouped in threes on each stem. Its resistance to diseases is good, and its generous flowering from June to October provided it does not lack sunshine—light fragrance. You can place it in isolation, at the centre of a bed or even in a container on the terrace.

Description

The Standard Rose 'Pierre de Ronsard' combines the elegance of a weeping habit, the touching beauty of old-fashioned roses, the floribundity and the resistance of modern roses. Its gracefully trailing crown is adorned with well-double roses, whose petals are warm pink with silver reflections on the reverse. It has good disease resistance, a light fragrance, and perpetual flowering that is even more generous when the plant is placed in the sun. Reserve a prime location for this variety with great ornamental value.

Standard roses are created through a process of grafting. A climbing variety of rose, such as the Cyclamen 'Pierre de Ronsard', is grafted onto a different type of rose, which has a single and upright stem belonging to a Rosa canina, R. laxa, or R. multiflora. The graft is done at a height of 90-100 cm (35-39 inches) above the ground. In very cold regions, protecting the rootstock during winter may be useful.

Rosa Cyclamen 'Pierre de Ronsard' (also known as 'Pink Eden Rose' or ‘Margaret Mae’) is a modern hybrid tea rose introduced in 2017 by the rose breeder Meilland. Grafted on a stem, it has a remarkable habit, with a crown composed of trailing stems. It reaches approximately 1.80 m (6ft) in height when mature with a 1 m (3ft) spread. It produces stiff, sturdy, thorny branches with elegant medium-green foliage that is slightly glossy and resistant to rose diseases if the growing conditions are correct. Throughout the summer, if faded flowers are removed and the soil remains moist, its large flowers with 70 petals, measuring 12 cm (5in) in diameter, emerge from large, round, pink buds and open into very double and globular roses divided into quarters, which open better under the sun and in a rather warm climate. The petals, of deep pink colour, have a reverse side that is warmer, lighter, and almost silvery. In the context of the flower, they create a beautiful range of pink hues. They are grouped in small clusters of 3, carried at the end of long shoots from the current year or from 2-year-old stems. Their fragrance is light. The plant loses its leaves in winter.

RosaCyclamen Pierre de Ronsard' is a rose that thrives in full sun like its parent Pierre de Ronsard and its vigour is ensured in a well-amended garden soil that does not dry out too much in summer. It is a perfect stem rose for borders and romantic bouquets. It allows for splendid decorations throughout the summer, placed in the centre of a border, as a focal point on a short grass meadow, or along a pathway. At its base, you can plant paniculate phlox, delphiniums, foxgloves, catmints, tall baby's breath, and other foxgloves.

Planting and care

The 'Pierre de Ronsard' Cyclamen Standard Rose can grow in any type of soil as long as it's watered and provided with the necessary nutrients. To ensure good growth, plant it in well-drained soil that's been worked on properly and keep it in a sunny spot, avoiding south-facing walls to encourage more flowers. Plant it in autumn, when it's not too cold outside.

The branches that are two years old give the most flowers. To promote healthy growth, cut the stems that bloomed the previous year down to three or four buds, or prune them to 15 cm (6 in). The new and strong stems will be trained, and the old ones can be removed if necessary. This rose is highly resilient and can tolerate temperatures as low as -25°C (-13°F). To prevent fruit formation, remove dead wood in winter and faded flowers. Light pruning can be done in spring after the risk of frost has passed. If you have a large garden, climbing roses can also be grown with ease.

In regions where winters are very cold, protecting the grafting stock of stem roses (the "trunk") is advisable by wrapping it with a thick winter cover.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
